A REPORT ON COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT

INAUGURATION OF PASSENGERS’ SHED AT JHARGRAM

Jhargram Township happens to be the socio-economic nerve centre for not only the vast subdivision that goes by its name, but also adjoining areas from the Jharkhand state and Bankura & Purulia districts of West Bengal. Hundreds of commuters avail of daily bus services plying through/from Jhargram to different destinations like Medinipur, Kharagpur, Haldia, Contai, Ghatal, Bankura, Purulia, Durgapur, Gopiballavpur, Nayagram, Baripada (Orissa), Chakulia (Jharkhand) etc.

Due to recent changes in the traffic control system in Jhargram all passengers are now forced to avail of the bus services from the main road near five-point crossing in heart of the township, where no facility of sheds existed to protect the passengers – elderly citizens to kids alike – from scorching Sun or downpour or fatigue from standing long waiting for the bus.

Rotary Club of Jhargram Green conducted a community need assessment in May 2008, and on the basis of assessment approached the local municipal body for a space by the roadside in the Rabindra Park. Thankfully, the Chairman of the Jhargram Municipality, Shri Pradip Kumar Sarkar, responded very positively allotting 40 feet long space along the roadside, and took personal interest in getting the Shed Construction Plan approved by the Municipality at the earliest possible.

Members of the Club then exhibited their enthusiasm under the leadership of the President Rtn. Malay Khan and 40 feet long shed was constructed with cemented bench. This community service project was undertaken as an exclusive club sponsored project without any external support for construction.

District Governor Rtn. Nayantara was kind to inaugurate the shed and dedicate it to the people in a brief ceremony held on 31.08.2008 at Jhargram in presence of the Chairman of Jhargram Municipality, Shri Pradip Kumar Sarkar, as the Special Guest.
